Help Me Find the Pefect Novel for Vacation Reading

I’m looking for a great book to take on vacation (less than two weeks away!).

I’ve already ordered Man and His Symbols for my big serious nonfiction vacation book. (The old hardcover, full-color illustrations version, of course). I’m lately very taken by the idea of mandalas and symbols.

But I’m trying to decide on what to take for a more engrossing read, for sheer pleasure. Some possibilities:

  • Wuthering Heights – I read this as a teenager but am due for a re-read. Or maybe some Jane Austen? Not sure this is the right genre for a read in Baja.
  • Cold Comfort Farm – Heard an NPR bit where someone described this as the book she read over and over again during travels, disappearing into it on buses and planes.
  • Aztec – I’ve started this twice and didn’t get very far. I think I decided that Aztec life might have been rather dull in between all the racey human sacrifice scenes. Worth another try?

Other than that, I’m coming up with an empty brain and looking for suggestions. Authors I love include Edward Abbey, Earnest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck. I think I want to stay away from sci-fi/cyberpunk stuff for this. Anyone know of any spicy Mexico-related novels that you can’t put down? Other suggestions?

  1. It’s Indian rather than Mexican, but I’m really enjoying The Namesake. If I’m done with it before you leave, you’re welcome to borrow it!

  2. Thanks, Suzanne! That’s an interesting suggestion.

I realized while browsing around the bookstore yesterday that this might be the perfect time to try out some Henry Miller, too.

  3. Shawn has been giving me some recommendations also, and I think I might pick up something by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

  4. The Namesake is a fantastic book, and it’s perfect to bring on a vacation. You should be able to finish it if you’re going for a week.
