Dramatic protest against shark-finning

Sea Shepherd is an amazing activist group with a mission to “end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans;” they are perhaps most famous for using their boats to try to enforce international laws on whaling in oceans where there is no other working law enforcement.

They’re also working with Lush Cosmetics on an anti-shark-finning campaign. From their newsletter:

Shoppers on Regents Street in central London likely got more than they bargained for last week. On September 3rd in a dramatic illustration of how sharks are caught and killed for their fins, Alice Newstead, performance artist and former employee of LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, voluntarily had her skin pierced with actual de-barbed shark hooks and hung suspended from the ceiling in the window of one of LUSH’s busiest shops for 15 minutes.

As a crowd gathered to watch in horror, Newstead said, “I am doing this because the demand for shark fin soup and other shark products is wiping out the shark population.” Unlike the 100 million sharks who are brutally slaughtered each year for their fins, Newstead commented, “I will be left with scars, but the wounds will heal.”

Here’s the video…I don’t have to give you a warning about it after that description, do I?

Eleven thousand sharks an hour…should we be surprised that our oceans are becoming empty?

  1. hello

i just watched the movie about shark finning last night, i am a surfer and scuba diver. why dont we embarress the chinese govt about stopping shark finning and taiwan govt as we did the japanese about whaling.

what is this not front cover of the ny times?? shark finning delpetes the oxygen in the world by reducing plankton.

  2. Shark fining shouldn’t be allowed. That’s because it’s driving 12 species of sharks near extinction. Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy in China and is often served during weddings and banquets. Although the Finning of sharks is allowed now, it shouldn’t be. Sharks are at the top of the food chain and if they all die off, there will be too much of one part of the food chain and it will collapse. Now does everyone really want to die? Because thats whats gonna happen unless we make a difference. Now who’s with me on that?Email kara_smile@hotmail.com if you agree with me

  3. I`m a musician and producer and I`m writing a new song in protest to shark finning, I would like to see some powerful people steping in and help embarrass the countries involved in this cold, outrageous, unthinking, uncaring behaviour, the chinese governament shoud be boycoted, we all should boycott any chinese product, anything that comes from China untill they stop these practices
