  2. I’ve a terrific photo on my wall of a Kazakh returning with his eagle on horse-back across the steppe from (as I like to think) a wolf-hunting expedition. My mother’s family on my grandfather’s side hailed from those parts, or so she liked to tell us, so I’ve always felt a sentimental affinity with this part of the world.
