About
I’m Terrie Miller, and I created this web site because I have too many web sites! I hope to make this a central place for my writings around the web.
I grew up as Teresa Schweitzer near Defiance, OH. I’m the oldest of four kids, all of us alumni of Ohio State University.
I met my husband, Steve Miller, while working as a tech support rep for WordStar in Bloomington, IN, in 1989. They told us they were sending a printer expert out to train us, and his name was Steve Miller and he was really funny and we’d all love him. I was irritated and expected some dumb jock to show up on Monday, but when I walked into the office that day I heard this voice that immediately got my attention. It took a few years for me to, ahem, pay attention to those feelings.
Steve and I did a zine called Lost Tequila Weekend for a while.
In addition to WordStar, I’ve worked for Systems Compatibility Corporation (later Inso), as a contractor for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Chicago, for a web hosting company that was eaten by Verio, and finally, 1999 to present, for O’Reilly Media, Inc.. Most recently I was the online manager for the Maker Media Division at O’Reilly, who bring us MAKE Magazine, CRAFT Magazine, and Maker Faire. I left O’Reilly after a lot of soul searching and realization that I needed time and space for more soul searching.
I love animals and we usually have a bunch of them around us, including a dog, two cats, chickens, and two California King Snakes. I’m a hawk watcher for Golden Gate Raptor Observatory and go birding whenever I can. I’m especially interested in the way that animals can reconnect us with nature and the world around us. I believe we’ve lost this connection in many ways, and are either completely divorced from it or have a delusional idea of what our place in the natural world is.
I’m member of the sangha at Stone Creek Zen Center.
